Dell vs. Sony: Budget laptop design

Everyone is getting into the sub-$1,000 laptop game, even Sony. Traditionally, its VAIO laptops have been high in style and high in price. Now, the company sells not one but three different VAIO series that start at less than $1,000. Should you consider a low-end VAIO laptop, or stick with a company that has more experience turning out inexpensive laptops like Dell?
Dell vs Sony laptop new design review

Inspiron or VAIO?

On the left, the Dell Inspiron 1420. Dell's 14-inch laptop starts at $699. On the right, the Sony VAIO NR160. Sony's 15-inch laptop starts at $829. In a nice design touch, both models forgo the clunky, plastic hooks above the screen that fit into the dust-and-dirt collecting slots on the base. Instead, the laptops' hinges snap the lid close, and hard rubber pads surround the display to protect the laptops' surfaces when closed.

Creative Aurvana X-Fi headphones (Play and listen Music easily)

Aurvana X-Fi earcup

The Aurvana X-Fi's design is somewhat counterintuitive, in that the main use for the X-Fi technology is improving lossy formats (more on this shortly), which are coming from an MP3 player a lot of the time. Yet an MP3 player is portable, and these headphones aren't compact.

There's no shortage of noise-canceling headphones on the market, but only one pair features Creative's sound-enhancing X-Fi technology: The Creative Aurvana X-Fi headphones. These headphones offer good sound quality and a comfortable fit, but it'll cost you--S$499, to be exact.

Dell XPS M1730 for Asia Note Book Review

Dell XPS M1730 (Core 2 Extreme T7700 Processor 2.4GHz, 2GB RAM)

bdp-

For too long, extreme gaming rigs from Dell, Alienware, Falconware, Voodoo, etc. have been denied to Asia consumers. People have to contend with shooting and looting on what are essentially entertainment desktop replacements like Sony VAIO VGN-AR48GP and Toshiba Qosmio G40.

Though the ASUS G2S is one of the few gaming-focused rigs, nevertheless dual graphics cards in portables were unheard of.

Darius Chang, CNET Asia says that " All these changed when Dell decided to bring in the XPS M1730. Possibly the first in Asia to offer two Nvidia GeForce 8700M GT video cards in the base configuration, this XPS ups the ante by also making it one of the few to include an option for PhysX graphics support.

If the graphics processing unit (GPU) is the cream giving the game its pretty looks, then the PhysX engine is the cake which changes the way we interact with the virtual world. Though it's by no means a budget system like the Inspiron series, we were surprised that this XPS came at a competitive price point. "

Dell XPS 420 - PC review on Latest Dell Gadget

Dell XPS 420 (Core 2 Quad Q6600 Processor 2.4GHz, 2GB RAM)

Dell's new XPS 420 desktop advertises itself as the complete solution to all of your digital-media problems. Depending on the options you select for it, it can wirelessly serve up photos, music, and high-definition video over your home network, it can quickly convert large video files to smaller, iPod- and Sony PSP-friendly formats, it can even record and time shift HD digital cable.

If you've embraced the idea of a traditional desktop acting as the media hub for your home network, the XPS 420 has you covered. It's also a capable system for manipulating consumer-level digital video. Gamers, HD DVD loyalists, and anyone not looking for a fully loaded digital media PC will find their needs better served elsewhere.
